Economic and Workforce Development Campaigns

SCOPE has spearheaded several successful campaigns that address conditions of poverty, unemployment and low-wages in Los Angeles’ inner-city communities. Working in alliance with other community organizations and labor unions, SCOPE has created innovative initiatives that target regional industries including entertainment, public sector, health care and, most recently, green building.  Our campaigns have resulted in thousands of quality career opportunities for poor and disadvantaged communities and offer models for effective economic and workforce development strategies.

Green Jobs: Los Angeles Apollo Alliance
The development of a green economy in Los Angeles has the potential to revitalize inner city communities through quality job creation, career ladder training, and healthy, sustainable economic development. In February 2006, SCOPE convened the Los Angeles Apollo Alliance— a coalition of 24 community organizations, unions and environmental groups. The Alliance launched a 3-5 year public policy aimed to ensure that low-income communities are strategically connected to the job creation in emerging green industries.
Jobs & Healthcare
In 2001, SCOPE won a commitment from the City of Los Angeles and the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) to fund a job training program that places low income residents into health care careers. The City of Los Angeles has embraced the Health Care Careers Ladder Training Program as a blueprint for effective sectoral workforce development strategies.
City Jobs
In response to the 1996 federal welfare reform legislation, SCOPE led an effort to establish City Jobs – a program created to train and place welfare recipients in living wage public sector jobs with career paths.
Workplace Hollywood/Dreamworks
In partnership with DreamWorks entertainment corporation, SCOPE created Workplace Hollywood – a $10 million workforce development program that trains and places low income inner city residents to jobs in the entertainment industry.
